Lawahing village Planted 100 black mangrove saplings on the Beach

Sept, 10 2022

The fragile coastline in RT 12, Lawahing village has received serious attention from the local community. Abrasion that continues to erode coastal land threatens residential areas around the area. To overcome this problem, TKB (Disaster Management Team) and residents of RT 12 took a real step by planting mangrove trees in abrasion-prone areas.

Responding to the mangrove planting initiative by TKB and the residents, TLM Foundation provided assistance in the form of 100 seedlings of rhizipora mucronata or black mangroves. The black mangrove was chosen because it has strong roots that can prevent abrasion, absorb carbon and can be a breeding ground for fish and shrimp. This type of mangrove is very suitable for maintaining the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

TLM Foundation and Lawahing Village Government have been working together since 2022 through several YTLM empowerment programs, one of which is Disaster Risk Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Strategy.

For information, the Disaster Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Strategy program is implemented in 4 YTLM partner villages in Kabola sub-district, Alor. The activities for this program are adjusted to the needs of each partner village. YTLM and the Village Government also formed a Disaster Management Team (TKB) whose members are representatives of several elements of the community such as village officials, youth groups, farmer groups, etc. The 100 mangrove planting activity was carried out by TKB together with residents of RT 12.

TKB in accordance with the Decree issued by the village head is responsible for facilitating the implementation, providing assistance, collecting data, mapping, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on activities associated with Disaster Risk Reduction and Environmental Sustainability Strategies

Lawahing Village Government and YTLM applaud the initiative made by TKB and the residents who recognized the potential for natural destruction and took action to preserve it from potential threats. This commendable initiative is expected to motivate other villages to take greater care in protecting their local environment.
